When Can You See the Northern Lights in Finland?
The Northern Lights season in Finland runs from late August to early April, with peak viewing typically between September and March. The best sightings happen on clear, dark nights—away from city lights and during solar activity.
Pro Tip: Try to stay at least 3–4 nights to increase your chances, as the aurora can be elusive and weather-dependent!
Best Places to See the Northern Lights in Finland
Finland’s Arctic Lapland region is one of the best places in the world for aurora hunting. Here are a few top spots:
1. Rovaniemi – Santa’s Official Hometown
While known for festive charm, Rovaniemi also offers great aurora viewing just outside the city. Combine Northern Lights hunting with visits to Santa Claus Village or a night in a glass igloo at Arctic SnowHotel.
2. Saariselkä & Kakslauttanen – Igloo Adventures
Home to iconic glass igloos, Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselkä is world-famous for its unique accommodation that lets you stargaze and (hopefully) catch the lights from the comfort of your bed.
3. Levi – For Skiers and Stargazers
Levi is a top winter sports destination, but it also offers excellent conditions for aurora watching, with guided tours via snowshoe, snowmobile, or even husky sled.
4. Inari & Nellim – Remote Wilderness Magic
Located deep in Finnish Lapland, the area around Lake Inari and Nellim is one of the darkest and most remote regions in the country—perfect for aurora spotting. Plus, you’ll find strong Sámi cultural influences here.
Bear in mind that where ever in Lapland you go, you'll have to get away from light pollution! The aurora can occur anywhere in Lapland, but the higher you go the better your chances are. However, hunting for the lights and following forecasts closely is key.
How to Increase Your Chances of Seeing the Aurora
Stay outside urban areas to avoid light pollution
Use aurora forecast apps like My Aurora Forecast or Aurora Alert FI
Book a guided aurora tour—local guides know where to go
Check the weather forecast—clear skies are a must
Dress warm and be patient; some of the best shows happen late at night
Unique Ways to Experience the Northern Lights in Finland
Sleep in a glass igloo or aurora dome
Chase the lights on a snowmobile or husky sled
Float in a frozen lake in a dry suit while gazing up
Photograph the lights with a DSLR or phone (using a tripod + long exposure)
Many resorts and lodges offer aurora wake-up calls, so you’ll never miss the show—even if you fall asleep early.
